A well-planned induction programme helps new governors and trustees to understand their roles and responsibilities and be effective. Therefore, 海角社区 believes induction should be mandatory for all new governors and trustees.

Induction should be tailored to fit the context of the school/trust and the new governor/trustee. Normally it involves providing essential information about the school/trust, offering support (such as a buddy or a mentor), making introductions, and signposting relevant training.

You can use our step-by-step guide to plan an induction programme that works for your board and takes account of the knowledge, skills and experience of new board members.

Our guide describes the following elements of induction:

  • an introductory visit and meeting
  • introducing other contacts
  • providing essential information
  • signposting induction training
  • support for the first meeting
  • developing skills and knowledge beyond induction
